Sonoma Stage Works is proud to announce the production of Proof by David Auburn as its 2015 contribution to Sonoma Arts Live. Proof will run August 20 - September 6 in Rotary Stage in Andrews Hall, Sonoma Community Center. Proof won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006 and went to Broadway, the lead role played by Mary Louise Parker.
Summary:
On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable mathematician father, must recalibrate her life. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions, the arrival of her estranged sister and her suspicion about the intentions of a former student of her fathers who wants to delve into his notebooks. Over a long weekend she is forced to decide how much to reveal about herself, whether to take the advice of her high roller sister, how to honor her fathers legacy and where romance might lead.
Director Todd Evans contributes the following notes:
Director's Letter for Proof
In an age when women's role in society (politics,
business, sports and more recently economics)
has begun to be recognized, it is always inspiring
to see a woman who can assail the glass ceiling
of mathematics.
But Proof is not a political tract about womens' rights. It's a finely spun story by David Auburn about one young woman, depressed by the loss of her beloved mentor and mathematician father, who rises above the cards she's been dealt and - well I don't want to give away the plot, but I can tell you I've found some magnificent actors to bring this story to life.
I have slowly learned that a person who struggles to find their voice in this world is a marvel to behold. But hold on………is that not the predicament with which we all grapple? Welcome to Proof …and may it inspire you as it has this director.
